Why accurate reporting on Care Home deaths matters

COVID deaths look like they are being  under-reported.

Our analysis shows that COVID deaths in Care Homes account for less than half the increase observed.

It is critical we understand if this is under-reporting or if there are other issues at play because the impact of COVID deaths is not felt equally.

Over 85’s are 32 times more likely to die from COVID than a young adult. You are more than 30% more likely to die from COVID if you experience the highest levels of deprivation.

Whilst attention surrounding COVID has been largely fixed on London, deaths in Care Home are having a greater relative impact in other areas.

Publication of all CQC data (by the ONS) on deaths in care homes would help private and public sector agencies coordinate a more effective response across the country.
